I am not a planner

I am not a planner. Now, when I say a planner I mean to the extent that I have every single detail mapped out on a project. I know a lot of authors who do plan, and sure, plans change as you dive into a world and start writing a story, but a lot of writers have guidelines . . . I am a very bad improviser.

Usually, I will get an idea in the form of a scene. One of the characters will come to me; they are vivid, and bold, and they give me a segment to wet my appetite. I know the general details on them, but that’s it. I pretty much dive right on in and figure it out as I go.

So far this silly approach of mine has worked, but with my latest WIP I find I am somewhat torn. I’m going in to the realms of fantasy, and I am creating a whole new world. I’m sure a lot of writers may have already taken this adventure in one particular genre or another, but this is new to me; fantasy, and creating an entire universe from scratch is very new to me.

I’m excited – of course I am – because this world is one that I have had hidden in my slush pile folder for the last seven years, but I will admit I am a little overwhelmed; there feels like there is too much to know and create in such a short amount of time.

My plan was to solely concentrate on my Blood Series this year. I have finished reading through She-Wolf – which is with my editor – and Cranberry Blood, and I was originally going to dive right in to planning the next book, but then I saw the most fabulous submission call, and I just couldn’t ignore it.

Decadent Publishing have a new series called “Beyond Fairytales,” where the author is assigned a Grimm tale and has to re-vamp it in their chosen genre.

Now, I could have ignored it, but I was too intrigued. I also could have made things very easy for myself and picked a genre I had already played in before, but when I got my assigned tale I just knew I had to go fantasy with it. I usually don’t apply for things that have a time limit, for many reasons which I won’t go in to, and because if I don’t make it I will kick myself. But still, I found myself signing up any way. So, needless to say this project is a huge challenge for me.

Jumping back to feeling excited . . . I am. I have snips. I have already met four of the characters they are an interesting bunch. I have a very rough sketch of how the world is and the inhabitants you will find there. I know magic is going to play a huge part, and I have been lucky enough to get a tale where I could really do anything with it . . .

Now I’m stuck. Not in a way where I am clueless, because despite the fact that I don’t plan I have had to do the above. I have had to figure some details out; write some guidelines. After I drew my map of the world – yes, I actually drew a map. It’s rough, but it’s a start – I found myself sitting there and thinking, “well, I can’t do any more than this until I get inside this world and see where I am lead.”

So, it is now time for me to get my panster-ness on and see what these characters want to show me. I have no idea what’s going to happen. I will openly admit that since Fantasy is new to me that I have no idea if I can pull it off successfully, but I am going to damn well try, and naturally, I will keep you updated with my progress. J

For those of you who have read the Blood Series and are waiting for the next book, I will definitely be working on that next, and I plan to have She-Wolf and Cranberry Blood re-released by this summer, 2014.

Wish me luck!

Best Valentine's Day I've Ever Had

So, Elizabeth asked me what the best Valentine's Day I ever had was. I almost didn't answer this question, because the answer is ... none. I still think I have the best Valentine's Day to come. Honestly, all my Valentine's Days have been kind of average and I think the reason might be one of two (or both).

  1. I find Valentine's Day to be horribly commercial, and I would rather someone made some grand romantic gesture for me on some random day that meant more than Valentine's Day, and all my partners have known this.
  2. My expectations are probably sky high. A 'best Valentine's Day' for me would be to be whisked away to some exotic place on a two week holiday - private villa on a private beach where we can have loud sex six-ways 'til Sunday - where everything was paid for and I didn't have to worry about a thing except being pampered and filling my days with explorative adventures.

Well, that costs a hell of a lot of money, and I've never ended up with rich guys! But in my head, I've always thought I'd just earn that kind of money and pay for it myself, you know? I never grew up thinking my man would be providing, but that I would provide for myself. Not very romantic, I know, but perhaps more realistic ... a little :)

There you have it. But I sincerely hope that YOU have a 'best Valentine's Day' either tomorrow, or soon!

In the meantime, here's the latest teaser from The Spell of Summer to keep you going...

Have a wonderful Valentine's Day and weekend, everyone.

A Champagne Lunch?

Dianna’s question for me today; In the spirit of Valentine’s, what is your favourite location for a champagne lunch?

Well, I haven’t really had much romance in my life so I can’t say that I have a favourite location for any type of romantic situation, but if there is one thing I am good at it is setting the scene.

I have to say I’m not actually a very fussy person. I have always personally believed that romance is not the scene/setting, but the company and how the time is spent together.

Also, I strongly believe that romance is all about interpretation; one person may conjure candlelight, roses, soft music, and dinner in a secluded room, or even a busy restaurant, another person may think that a day at a funfair is romantic, sitting on a bench eating fish and chips.

So, with all that in mind, and pretending for the slightest moment that I have wonderful company to share a champagne dinner with . . . . I shall set some scenes that I might find to be a romantic situation.

Outdoors; a park, or field. A picnic under a blossom tree – I happen to find them very beautiful – late on a summer afternoon, watching the sunset. Cliché? Perhaps, but I’m fantasising here.

Outdoors; the back garden, or a hotel balcony. Sitting outside, somewhere private, with the stars above – I’m a bit of a night owl. I much prefer the night to the day.

Indoors: your home. I think this is pretty self explanatory, but yes, a romantic meal at home is also a nice idea.

Indoors: I love the theatre. It is a very magical and well, spiritual place for me. So, champagne dinner and a show. A little straight forward, but watching a love story on stage, and then spending time with someone special afterwards – or before hand – is still romantic, at least to me.

I think I could go on, but really it is the effort and thought put in to romantic plans that make them so special.
Well, I know I want be getting a champagne dinner this year, but I hope you all have a lovely Valentine’s day, and that you remember that love should be celebrated every day, not just Feb 14th.

The Spell of Summer update at 26,800 words in.

I LOVE this story!!! When I got the idea for The Spell of Summer, I loved it then, but it all seemed to change when I started writing it and the vision altered and it wasn't what I thought it would be. That infuriated me a bit, but in the end I went with it, and I'm now in a place where I'm in love with what's happening. It's soooo very different from writing my paranormal stories and I feel I'm growing as a writer through this, solely because stretching yourself is necessary for learning and growing.

I've mentioned before that it reads a bit like women's fiction - it does, but it also reads a bit like a contemporary romance and it does have a paranormal flair to it, although nowhere near as much as my other books. This story is not only about a woman's journey - it's a journey for all the characters. I tried to keep it just about the hero and heroine - honest I did! I failed. It's just not me. I have to write about all the people - they are all so interesting, they all feed the hero and heroine's stories, and their stories will also unfold over the next few books...

Oooo ... did I just say that? Yes, I did! I envision, currently, four books in the Once Times Thrice series - all of them standalones, but with characters that overlap. And I am so over trying to 'categorise' this book and series now (even though I'll need to when to comes to publishing it) - it just is what it is.

Here is the latest visual teaser, as I am now 33% in - I am one third of the way to completing this book :D

Animal-Human Hybrid

Dianna's question for me this week comes at a fun time as I am currently mapping out my own world  for a new project I will be working on before starting work on Blood Book 2.

Decadent Publishing have a new submission call, Beyond Fairytales, and when I read it there was no way I couldn't take part. So, I applied and have been assigned a Grimm's Fairytale to rework and retell, and I have decided I am going to step in to the realms of fantasy, but in order to do so I have had to create my very own world, and well, it's a world I have been picking at and adding too since I started writing books, and it just so happens that the "creature" which is mentioned in Dianna's question is one of this world inhabitants - well, a version of some type of this creature.

The question: If you had to be an animal-human hybrid (not a shifter, but in the permanent hybrid state for all to see), which animal would you choose to share your body with and why?

Picture taken from Wikipedia
Oh yes, I have a certain type of creature in this world, but I will save those details for another time. This question is actually really easy for me to answer, because I have actually thought about this before. Yes, I'm weird, otherwise hey, I'm a writer, of course I think about stuff like this.

If I was an animal-human hybrid I would be part Cheetah. Why? Because they are sleek, graceful, and beautiful. Having two house cats I tend to watch them and they are playful, funny, jump great heights, I loved the way cats walk, they look like they're strutting, and of course you have claws, fangs, you can see in the dark, you have good hearing, but the main reason why I would happily share my body with a cheetah is because they can run really freakin' fast; like up to 60mph. Insane!

So, there we go, if I could be an animal-human hybrid, I would be a human/cheetah lady. ;-P
